I'm not a mechanic / technician but I believe the answer is ( no )
From what I have read there were ( 3 ) different 4.0 liter EFI engine blocks
( 1991 to 1994 Ford Explorers )
( 1995 and 1996 Ford Explorers )
( 1997 to 2000 Ford Explorers )
For the Ford 4.0 liter EFI V6 engine ( which is the Over Head Valve / pushrod design engine , the eighth " character " of the VIN is an " X " )
No, the door on a 1998 Ford Explorer will not fit a 1992 Ford Explorer.
I was looking at fordparts.com and it shows the same part number ( Motorcraft DGE - 446 ) for the six tower coil pack on a 1994 Ford Explorer 4.0 liter OHV engine as the 4.0 liter OHV or SOHC engines in a 1998 Ford Explorer , so apparently the answer is YES
5.0 liter motor
The 1992 Ford Explorer is a 4.0 liter OHV engine , in 1999 ( depending on which model and trim you have ) the 4.0 L OHV engine and the 4.0 L - SOHC - engine was used
One of the available engines in a 1998 Ford Explorer ( 4 door ) was the 5.0 liter ( 302 cubic inch ) V8 , so YES
According to the 1998 Ford Explorer Owner Guide : For the 4.0 liter V6 engine , EFI and SOHC versions ( Motorcraft FL-1A ) For the 5.0 liter V8 engine ( Motorcraft FL-820S )
The Ford 4.0 liter OHV , V6 engine has ( 1 ) timing chain ( but the 1998 Ford Explorer XLT model , if it has the 4.0 liter V6 engine , would have the SOHC engine which has ( 3 ) timing chains )
For a 1998 Ford Explorer XLT : The 4.0 liter SOHC , V6 and the 5.0 liter V8 take ( " regular " unleaded , 87 octane )
The Ford 4.0 liter SOHC engine has ( 3 ) timing CHAINS
On a 1998 Ford Explorer , 5.0 liter V8 engine : Bank 1 is the passenger side of the engine Sensor 1 would be close to the engine BEFORE the exhaust enters the catalytic converter
( .054 inch ) for the 4.0 liter OHV , 4.0 liter SOHC , and the 5.0 liter V8 engine
The 1992 Ford Explorer is the 4.0 liter over head valve engine The 8th " character " of the VIN is an " X " , the 4.0 liter over head cam engine came out in 1997 , the 8th " character " of the VIN is an " E "
