Usually, a president keeps trying to get his nominees confirmed; depending on how polarized the senate is, that process can take a while. Sometimes, when it becomes obvious a particular nominee is not going to be successful, the nominee will withdraw his or her name and someone else will be nominated. But generally, when a president's term ends, his nominees are no longer considered, since the new president will have his (or someday, her) own set of nominees.
