The short answer is no, this is not possible without significant modifacation.

The 4 speed automatic that is used in the later trackers is a computer controlled automatic whereas the earlier 3 speed is a more traditional purely mechanical automatic. In a nutshll, I believe that the bell housings have the same bolt patterns but the bracing and mounts for the 4 speed are more involved and the computer controller box for the 4 speed would need to be installed and integrated into the vehicles ECU (main computer). Theoretically it may be possible to make these modifications to a 96/97 tracker (a pre 95 is more doubtful) but it is not a practical undertaking.

Hi, This isn't an answer but a further asking on this. I haven't been able to find this out either and I also need to know this as I have the 3 spd and a '97 and I would like to change my trans as I have a torque converter problem and need to swap out. I hope someone knows this. Steve H.
