with a cutting wheel, and a welding rig, any tank will fit any bike....... just kidding. Find out if the tank is for a carb model, or a FI model, if it's carb, I'm about 90% sure it will........
Sorry, but it will not work. 84-99 softails (fatboy, heritages) used split tanks where they were 2 separate tanks. In 2000 Harley switched to a single tank where they were combined so they are completely different. Now his first method of a cutting wheel and welding could make it work, but it will not be a direct bolt on replacement, you could only go down to a 2000 model for that. You will however need to make sure whether it is a FI or carb setup as he had mentioned.

The started putting computers in the bikes a while back. The engine light stays on for a few seconds after turning the ignition switch on to allow the fuel pump to pressureize and the computer to boot up and callibrate. You should NOT start the bike before the light goes out!
