Is the 1990 car a V6 or 4cyl? The 1988 is either a 2.2L or 2.5L four cylinder "tall deck" engine. Is the '88 engine turbo charged? Many issues involved. If the 1990 engine is a four cylinder then it is a "common block" unit. 1988 and earlier 4cyl's use a different ECU than the 1989+ common block engines. Electrical harness is different if the 1990 engine is a V6 or a turbo 4cyl. More info needed.
