The wheel will probably fit. At worst, you may have to add a washer or two in either side of the axle.
But if you have indexed shifting(levers go "click" between set positions) then the shifting will no longer match up. Also, the sprockets and the chain wear in together, replacing just the one often lead to the chain slipping.
The good news is that if both the old and the new wheel is of a"freewheel" design, then you can easily have the sprocket stack from the old wheel moved to your new wheel.
OTOH, if your old wheel was of the freehub design, then you're SOL.
