Yes, but I don't know why you would take the HEI / High energy ignition distributor out and replace it with 1 that has points and condenser. That would be a BAD move.

Sounds to me like you need to replace the spark plugs, spark plug wires and rotor. If the condition still persists, replace the distributor cap.
Yes you do. You have to take the distributor shaft out of the distributor to Remove the pick-up coil / stator.
Replace plugs, points, condenser, & rotor. Check distributor cap, plug wires, and replace as necessary. Check timing and carburetor and adjust if need be. Replace Fuel, & Air filter.
