All MacBook models came with CD/DVD players (and or burners) so you should be able to play any DVD-Rom.
If you go to the Apple Menu in the upper left corner and select About this Mac/ More Info... Then select Disk Burning it should list your CD/DVD player/burner and all the categories it can burn/play back. If it doesn't show then look under ATA and it should show up as just a player.
DVDROM Drives are read only, these do not have the ability to write discs
The MacBook's DVD Player software will play all standard DVDs inserted into the DVD drive on the side of the MacBook.
