They are bottom dwellers and will eat bits of dried food that has sunk to the bottom of the tank. They are omnivores and obviously prefer their food fresh like all other fish. They are NOT Vegetarian or Algae Eaters so lettuce and cucumber are not on their list of yummy things to eat. Plecostomus sp. like Bristlenose algae eaters will love that kind of fare. If you wish to give your Rainbow Shark a treat, feed it some live tubifex or red or blackworms
