No.. They really have nothing in common. A speed sensor sends a signal from your transmission that is shown on your gauge in the dash. That is all the sensor does- it has nothing to do to my knowledge with the shifting functions
No. A slipping transmission is caused by a low fluid level, or failure of friction parts inside the transmission. Though a failing Vehicle Speed Sensor(VSS) can cause symptoms that can make it appear that the transmission is slipping, even though it is not.

A Vehicle Speed Sensor (VSS) senses the speed of the vehicle. Used for automatic transmission shift points and other electronics. Another speed sensor would be a wheel speed sensor. This one monitors wheel speed for ABS and Traction control.

It is mounted on the transmission.
A bad transmission speed sensor will result in the transmission not shifting at the proper times. The defective transmission speed sensor may also cause the vehicle not to idle properly.
the speed sensor is on the transmission right behind the manifold- It has two 10mm bolts and a small harness sitting on top of it.
