Well at pet stores were they sell hermit crab supplies there should be something called a vacation pack which should have packs of food that will last your hermit crab a certain amount of days usually around 5 days. Then after the days are up you can get a family member to change it for a new one if you are still gone.

No. Not usually. You are supposed to have 2 feeding shells. One for treat and one for food. Because when you have the treat in the hermit crab won't eat the food. (Like if you had the choice of cake or spinach.) So you are supposed to put the treat in every day or two days. Hope this helps!

Absolutely. Marine hermit crabs (saltwater hermit crabs) also, like the land hermit crab, have a soft abdomen that is not protected by a hard exoskeleton, so they scavenge shells from snails as they grow to wear for protection. The marine hermit crab will also shed it's exoskeleton as it grows. This is a very fast process, taking only a few hours to a day compared to the molting process of the land hermit crab, which can take several days to a few months.

Do hermit crabs stay in their shells when they molt?
Yes, the hermit crab remains in it's (outer) sea shell/home when it molts. However, when the hermit crab molts it sheds it's old exoskeleton much like a snake sheds it's skin, pushing the old exoskeleton out of the sea shell, and forms a new exoskeleton. The new exoskeleton is soft at first and takes time to harden. The hermit crab's "tail and belly" section remains soft and vulnerable requiring a hard outer shell/sea shell for protection.
