It depends on whether your regular sewing machine is a heavy duty machine or not. You can use a machine that is not heavy duty, but you risk damaging the timing, the tension and more. Either way, to sew on canvas you need a heavy duty needle (for denim- a size 16 or 18). To sew leather you need a sharp knife-like needle, it's called a leather needle.
For both of these heavy materials you need heavy duty thread, use a longer stitch than you would for fabric, a #4 stitch should be adequate. You may have to lessen or increase the pressure on the foot and the tension, a Teflon or roller foot would also be helpful. Finally, when you sew these, hold the material in front and behind to help guide it. Hope this helps.
Leather can be sewed using any sewing machine, but the Singer mid-range models would do the best job at the most reasonable price.

No it's not. I just purchased one and it will not see a patch on a thin leather vest. The machine is a good machine but if your looking for an industrial machine this is not the one for you. I thought it was when I bought it, but for 30 bucks I still have a great machine for my lite work!

Your feet on the pedal and your hand on the wheel. Everything on a treadle is manual. Some people put one foot on the back and one foot on the front of the treadle pedal when they are making the machine work. Treadle sewing takes a lot of practice! The pedal is attached to the sewing machine with a leather belt wrapped around a large wheel that is then wrapped around the wheel on the sewing machine.
