there is 2 of them depending on what type of tranny you have, the MAIN sensor that makes the speedo work is located on the rear transfer case and NOT on the tranny itself. the other is a much smaller sensor that does go on the tranny but that ones DOESN'T effect your speedo. if you speedo is not working then its going to be the BIG sensor in the rear.
Check the speed sensor on the top of the tranny. This will tend to build up with metal shavings and cause the sensor not to read the speed of the transmission.
No it will not blow your engine or tranny up it has nothing to do with either of them. The thing to look for is if a speed sensor is out.
It can be several things, the vehicle speed sensor could be out or wires disconnected. Does your car stall out when going slow? If it does it's the v.s.s. that is located on the end of your tranny on the drivers side.
tranny cable?
there is a speed sensor on the rear of the tranny which puts out a pulse to the ecm this is converted to dc current to drive the speedometer faster the speed more pulses more pulses the higher the dc the higher the dc the faster the speed display
Yes there is a speedometer sensor on top of the tranny that feeds the transmission computer and the speedo gauge. See the service manual for details on where it is, I believe on the LS it is acccessible without having to drop the tranny.
Time for a new Tranny or a rebuilt. This is something that a Tranny shop needs to look at they have specialized equipment. First and reverse are usually the same gear except reverse direction. At least that has been my experience. It could just be shift solenoids are bad or even speed sensor. Have a good tranny shop check this out. Hope this helps
The odometer gets its signal from the speed sensor, so if the (tailshaft) speed sensor is bad then the odometer obviously will not work
Bad speed sensor is a likely culprit
It wouldn't hurt to try putting a new speed sensor in it. Its not hard to replace. It is located on the side of the tranny. It runs around 20 bucks. If that doesn't work then you might need to get your tranny looked at Sounds to me like the kickdown band is worn and the linkage inside the trans for it has fallen off. You will most likely need an overhaul.
Check VSS(vehicle speed sensor)on tranny, the most common problem of speedometer errs, providing your vehicle is equipped with a speedometer cable. Also,VSS,will cause erratic speedometer reads. - Big Daddy
