Check your flywheel. A loose flywheel can make a knocking sound and would do so almost instantly.
Yes; if your fuel pump relay fails you will not get fuel to your motor and your vehicle will not start.
If the casting isn't finished in that area, you can't use the old-style pump.
This condition could happen if there is a motor trying to start on the circuit. A water pump motor will do this if the pressure switch is not working properly. Switch is calling for motor to start. Motor starts and switch shuts the pump off right away. pressure instantaneously drops and pump tries to start again. This cycling will continue until the pump's overloads drop the pump off line.
if the engine turns over and it is not getting fuel, more than likely fuel filter or fuel pump problems if the car is not getting fuel.
if its carbuetated then its on the motor cause its mechanical
not sure why but if I turn the key wait till the fuel pump kicks off my cavalier normally does start right up

Assuming you have replaced the fuel pump relay, try replacing the engine oil pressure switch/sending unit. It doubles as a safety switch for the fuel pump.
A fuel pump relay switch can cause your car to stall after starting. A malfunctioning fuel pump relay switch can cause your car to not start at all.
A water pump has a "weep" hole. When the seals start to wear out the water pump will still start to leak from this hole. When this happens it is time to change the water pump.
Debris in the hoses or reservoir could cause the motor to overheat. Also, running the pump without fluid could do the same.
A loud knock is usually associated with a rod bearing. The rod connects the crankshaft to the piston. If a rod bearing went out, possibly from an oil pump going bad, it would stall out the motor.
