Acetone will destroy most plastics. Try Goof-off. Or go to a salon or Walmart and buy non-acetone nail polish remover. That works on some solvent-based glues.
The solvent in the acetone( mostly found in polish remover) will allow the styrofoam to melt.

The advantages of Plexiglas compared to that of normal glass are first that Plexiglas cost a fraction of the price, second it is very durable and wont shatter like glass.
