I believe that you are asking if the Forester engine is what is known as an "interference engine". That is, is it possible for the valves to contact the pistons if they are out of synchronization? My answer is based on empirical evidence from my '96 Outback and my assumption is that these engines are similar in this regard. No, the piston will not contact the valve if the belt breaks. But why take the chance? Change the timing belt because if it fails, the engine ceases working immediately. There are times in every day driving where having the car stop could be deadly. Don't forget to change the water pump at the same time. --Ken
