I think that cars will still be existing but they will not be that popular. Since technology is improving, better transport will be made.
There will always be a need for mechanics. Even if we go to battery powered cars or hover cars or planes in the future - somebody still has to maintain them and keep them going.

In most cases, it would be more correct to say that the cars are designed around existing axles, much like they are designed to use existing bearings. There are probably some vehicles for which axles are custom designed, though, and it would still be correct to say that a specific axle will only fit a specific car or cars.

Currently, electric cars seem to be the most practical cars. In the future, algae based fuel could also be put into use, but would still produce carbon emissions.
