From my experience, chickens will go wherever the food/water goes, and also where the other chickens go.

I'm assuming your question is directed towards you wondering if you can leave the chickens run outside during the day and lock their coop at night. Unless you are ABSOLUTELY sure that no predators can get into their "play" area, I would stay outside with them to ensure their safety.

I love chickens, but rememember, as funny and cute as they are, chickens are not intelligent animals. I've heard stories that if you light a candle in the corner of a dark room, chickens (and turkeys) will light themselves on fire by running into it with their feathers...
