If you have broadband, plugging another computer into the router will have no effect. If you still rely on Dial-Up, then it will cost more. For easier access, buy a wireless dongle for your computer to connect it to your router with ease.

How do you use a router with a dsl modem bc The router instructions say to plug the Ethernet cable into the computer and To do that you have to unplug the DSL modem's Ethernet cable from the computer?

Yes you take the internet access from the modem to the computer and move it to the router so the router can allow more access than just to the computer. In the back of the router there are spots for ethernet cables only one is a input and that comes from the modem and should be connected. There should also be 4 or more outputs and one then gets connected to the computer. You will need to buy more ethernet cables. Internet comes from your DSL modem and you need to disconnect your computer to allow the router to be installed. Your computer and anything else is then connected to the router

What computer parts start with R?

The only part I could think of is the router. A router communicates information between two or more computer networks.

What software does one need if they are looking into wireless networking?

With wireless networking, you will need a wireless router and a wireless computer. Cisco is a good wireless router that is low cost and is easy to set up. There are many more name brands to choose from as well.

Does it cost more to hook up more than one computer to the internet?

Perhaps. If you use dial-up internet, you would most likely have to have a second line and another account to have more than one computer hooked up. If you have DSL or Broadband service, then all you need is a network hub to provide additional connection, or you could also use a wireless router if your computers are wireless capable. With these two options, you are always connected and it does not cost to have more than one hooked up.

Is a wireless router part of computer hardware?

No. Computer hardware is what is in the computer such as hard drive, motherboard etc. A router is a separate item. A router "routes" network data from one connection on the router to another of the router connections using internal parameters to determine where to "route" the data. It uses internal tables usually set (programmed) by the owner or network administrator and by information contained in the network transmission data (where is it coming from and where should it go). A wireless router is just a router with one or more radio transmitter/receiver that act as additional network conections with the additional programming to manage the wireless connections. A router is a computer processor, memory, and the additional hardware to handle the (ethernet) network connections and the wireless connections). Some routers (the more expensive firewall routers) even have hard drives (or flash drives) and the ability to attach a keyboard, mouse and monitor for management purposes. The cheaper simpler routers usually are only managed by a web browser interface Any computer with one or more ethernet network ports and/or wireless connectivity can be used as a router with the correct software installed.

Does internet service cost more with a wireless router?

Only if you pay per Megabyte. If you have a fixed price it does not matter whether you are using a router or not.

What do you need to share your internet conncetion with more than one computer?

You can do this several ways. If your computer has Wi-Fi (or AirPort on an Apple computer), you may connect to your router. If your computer does not have wireless capability, you will need to upgrade the wireless card or split ethernet cables. Most routers will have several available areas to plug in a two-way ethernet cable. If you have a standard modem with a single two-way cable, you can purchase an attached router for around fifty USD. These more modern and advanced routers will generally have more than one ethernet port (be sure to check)! You can purchase two-way cables for any of your devices and connect them, though they will need to be close to the modem or router. If you wish to connect a computer to the Internet and are not in reach of your modem or router, I'd suggest checking the wireless card, and if necessary, upgrading it. This upgrade will cost slightly more than a router, but is worth the investment.

What will a router do on a network that a hub will not?

In the shortest way to answer: a router takes the information, locates the computer the information is going to specifically, and sends it directly to that particular computer. A hub does the same, but it is more used for Local Area Networks (LAN). *Switches also fall under this category* If internet is desired with a hub or switch, one must take a server (or another computer) and have it communicate to the internet as well as the hub.
