If the Modem was already working and for example you unplug your computer and plug in the PlayStation 3 it will work after you go to the PS3 network settings and make the connection. It will be easier on you to find a used router and plug it into the modem and then plug both the computer and PS3 into the router.

Can a wireless router work without a Ethernet cable?

You need a Ethernet to connect the router to the networking box. All other things (except desktops) do not need a cord to connect to internet.

A newly bought Ethernet cable that is connected to my PS3 did not connect to the internet and it just says IP Address Attempt Failed Whats wrong?

Many different things could be wrong. The cable could be bad even if it is newly purchased. What do you have the other end of the cable plugged into. Can you unplug the PS3 and verify that the connection works by plugging it into a PC or other ethernet capable device. Many people have though that the ethernet input on the computer was an output which would allow them to use the computer to provide internet for the PS3. Both My PS3 and PC ethernet cables are plugged into the back of my wireless router (for wired connection). The router also has an ethernet cable which is plugged into my cable modem. The router was purchased to allow two items to be connected to the cable modem, but the system will also work if you just unplug one device from the modem and plug in the other. Of course the first time you will have to do the set up for the internet connection.

What does masquerading mean on a computer?

Often, this means MAC masquerading. MAC is the unique hardware address to an ethernet adapter. For instance, your computer would have one MAC address for a wired ethernet port, and another for a wifi adapter.Masquerading means passing off another MAC as the one actually belonging to the adapter.Example:You have a cable modem connected to your cable ISP, and a single computer connected to the modem. Your computer wired ethernet MAC is 11:22:33:44:55:66.You go out and buy a new wifi router+access point, and try to connect it to the modem, and connect your PC to the access point via WiFi. It doesn't work. You connect to the access point but not the internet. Why not? When your modem was initially set up with the ISP, the ISP "provisioned" (allowed access to) the MAC address of your PC (11:22:33:44:55:66).Now that the router is connected to the modem, the ISP sees the MAC address of the router (99.88.77.66.55.44) and does not see the "allowed" MAC address of your PC because your PC is no longer directly connected to the ISP.Proper fix: Call ISP and re-provision the new MAC address of the router.Quick fix: set up the router's MAC masquerading function to transmit the old PC MAC address instead of the router's MAC, tricking the ISP into thinking the old hardware is still connected.

Why doesnt the Xbox 360 Ethernet cord work on the PS3?

Maybe the ethernet cable is not your problem. Ethernet cables are available everywhere and they all should work for the PS3, PC, router, modem, etc. ethernet ports are one way and are either in or out. The spot on back of the PS3 to connect an ethernet is a standard size and is meant to connect to a modem or a router or it will not work.

If you are using cable broadband how do you connect your laptop to internet from another area in your home?

You purchase a wireless router and short ethernet cable (some routers include the cable) and connect it to the cable modem output with the short ethernet cable, then connect the ethernet cable that was connected to your modem outputs to the wireless router outputs. This will only work if your Laptop has WiFi capability The prices of wireless router vary greatly and many can be purchased less than for retail price. Review online prices before making a purchase to prevent overpaying.

Wireless routers have spots on the back to plug in ethernet cables. Mine has one input and 4 outputs. It may work if you plug in one wireless router to your modem and then run the ethernet cable from the out of that wireless modem to the in on the other

What does a modem do to enable a ps2 online?

If nothing else is connected to the modem you can use a ethernet cable to connect the ps2 to the modem and the internet. If you also have a PC then you need to put a router between the modem and PC and also connect the PS2 to the router which will allow both the PC and PS3 to work off the same modem

What do need for the ethnic cable to work on the Playstation 3?

You might mean the ethernet cable and you need to connect it to your cable or DSL modem and then the PS3. If items are already connected and you don't want to switch back and forth you need to purchase a router and connect everything to the router the modem cable goes in the in and the PS3 and PC or other devices go in the out.

Because the new xbox has built in wifi Does that mean it doesnt matter if your modem's wireless doesn't work?

Can the same cord that you use for internet on a laptop be used for internet on the ps3?

Any Ethernet cord can be used to connect the PS3 with a wired connection. You cannot use a modem cable however. Check to make sure that it is an Ethernet cable and if so, yes it will work.

Would it work if you connected an Ethernet cable to a modem and then to a ps3 to play on line?

If for instance you have a PC connected to the internet with an ethernet cable at a cable modem you can unplug the ethernet cable to the PC at the modem and Plug in a ethernet cable from the PS3 to the modem and a connection to the internet is possible. If the PC and PS3 are close enough you can just unplug the PC ethernet cable at the PC and move it over to the PS3. The first time you do this you need to go to the PS3 network setting and auto set the network settings. When you are done using the PlayStation 3 you just unplug the ethernet cable for the PS3 from the modem and plug the PC cable back into the modem for the PC to go back online or switch the cable back if it was close enough. When you get tired of doing this just purchase a router and plug the PS3 and PC into the router and plug the router into the modem.

When you connect your ps3 to the internet does it mean that the internet on the computer won't work?

No. Unless you are using a wired connection and unplug the computer's Ethernet cable because you do not have a router or WiFi Modem.
