No. It is physically impossible for the planet Mars to appear in earth's sky, as close as the Moon. At its closest, Mars is about 40 million miles away. The Moon is only about 238,000 miles.

You are probably referring to the "Mars Hoax" e-mails that come around every August 27.

On August 27, 2003, Mars did come a little closer than usual to the Earth; it was "only" 0.37272 AU away, or about 34.6 MILLION miles. A breathtakingly hysterical e-mail went around declaring that Mars would look AS BIG AS THE FULL MOON, and then added in small type on the next page, "when seen through a 75-power telescope".

In 2010, the closest approach to Mars occurred on January 29, 2010, at an entirely unimpressive 0.664 AU, or about 60 million miles.

The next "fairly close" CPA to Mars will be on July 27, 2018, at a distance of 0.384 AU.

Will mars be close to earth on August 28 2009?

No. That's the "Mars Hoax" that Mars will be close to Earth and appear "as bigas the full moon!". Not even close to being true.

Will Mars be as large as the moon in August?

Mars is always larger than the moon. However, I think you mean will it appear bigger than our moon. No - never - not even close.

Mars is tremendously farther away from the Earth than the moon is.

Where is Mars when you can see it?

on august 26th 2010, mars is coming very close to earth--so you should be able to see it from your front lawn or out your window. Supposedly Mars will look as large as the moon from the sky.

Will Mars appear larger in August 2009?

No. Mars did make an exceptionally close approach to Earth in August 2003, and every year since, spammers change the date and resend the message. However, Mars will NEVER appear "as big as the full Moon". Right now, on August 9, 2009, Mars rises a little before sunrise and is visible low in the eastern sky at dawn. By January, 2010, Mars will be overhead at midnight, but this will be one of the more distant conjunctions.

Is the moon between earth and Mars?

No. The moon is closer to Earth than Mars is, but it orbits Earth independent of the motion of Mars. Sometimes the moon may appear right next to Mars in the sky while at other times it may be opposite Mars.

What planet does the moon line up with?

The Moon orbits Earth, so it does not typically "line up" with planets. However, during certain alignments, the Moon can appear close to planets in the sky from our perspective on Earth, such as lining up with Jupiter or Mars.

What is that red thing by the moon?

It could be Mars, as it is commonly visible as a bright reddish object in the night sky and can sometimes appear near the Moon. Another possibility is a red planet or star that is particularly bright and close to the Moon from our perspective on Earth.

Planet with the moon Phobos?

Why is it so much more difficult to send astronauts to the moon than mars?

You appear to be misinformed. It is more difficult to send people to mars because it is so much farther away. That is why we have not sent astronauts to mars yet, but we have sent astronauts to the moon.

Is Mars going to look as big as the moon on August 27 2010?

No. This is a repeat of a hoax from 2006. At it's nearest Mars will only look about 500 times smaller than the Moon.
