No Syrian hamsters are very Territorial and they like to live on there own but dwarf hamsters like to live in groups or pairs otherwise they would get too lonely.

You must play with your hamster i you want it to lead a happy normal life. I guess giving it treats or letting run around your room is better that not playing with it at all because at least then it gets some freedom and a different scenery. But playing with your hamster is always better!
