I don't think it's a question of diesel or gas. More like how new you car is. Most cars and trucks would be completely fine running without a muffler, unless there are some sort of electrical components attached. But keep in mind, besides re-routing exhaust and dampening noise, your exhaust system also uses the heat build up in the pipes to slowly cool your engine after you shut it off. Removing all pipes may cause warpage of your cylinder heads.
