Shadow and Rogue are together. Shadow was in love with Maria until she died. Knuckles was into Rogue a little in a love-hate relationship. Shade came into the series as another echidna, and Knuckles fell in love with her. Shadow was doing the loner act, but Rogue kept hanging with him. That's how they loved each other.
BTW, Shadow saw a little of Maria in Rogue.
