The British term for a submachinegun was a "Machine Carbine". MC. See the link below for some more info on the Sten.
There were several firearms that used a magazine that attached at the side of the weapon. One of them was the British STEN gun. Run a Google image search for sten, and see if that is what you are looking for. BTW, that was a simply made submachinegun. Additionally, there was the MP-18 (which originally used Luger magazines, and was later refitted), MP-28, and Japanese Type 100, which may also be what you're looking for.
The most commonly used one was the STEN, which was made in four marks (variants). The Lancaster submachinegun was also in service, but saw very limited use, mostly by the Navy.
