An independent candidate is someone who is not affiliated with any political party and runs for office on their own. They do not have the support or backing of a political party and typically rely on their own campaign and resources to compete in elections. Independent candidates often emphasize their independence from party politics and may appeal to voters who are disillusioned with major parties.
George Washington was an independent. Once parties were formed every president was elected with some political party backing. James Monroe did not have any strong opposition so party affiliation was not a major factor in his election but he was not really an independent.

Tate and Lyle's campaign played a pivotal role in the Conservative victory in the 1951 election by leveraging their influence in the sugar industry to support the party's messaging. Their backing included funding and resources that helped amplify the Conservatives' economic agenda, which promised prosperity and stability after the post-war Labour government's austerity measures. This support resonated with voters concerned about rising living costs and economic challenges, ultimately contributing to the Conservatives' electoral success. The campaign thus effectively highlighted the party's commitment to revitalizing the British economy.

The person who is backing out of the parking space
I would say probably the person backing out, as they should of looked for any oncoming cars before backing out. ---- The person backing out of the driveway who did not yield to oncoming traffic.
Elections are won by running for office. You can run as an independent or as part of the political party system. Some offices are non-political without the a particular political party as backing candidate.
