Trans has to come out the bottom.
how to remove a engine in a 1999 Pontiac grand prix 3.8L
Its easier from the bottom (just make sure you use a engine support bar to hold the engine)
The trans filter is located inside the trans. You have to remove the pan from the bottom of the trans. You should be able to see it when the pan has been removed.
No you do not have to remove the timing chain. Look on the PASSENGER SIDE, FRONT ENGINE AREA, MOUNTED REAR OF WATER PUMP.
Remove the bottom cowelling under the steering wheel, it is on the left hand side. It is silver (unless it is electronic in which case it will be clear) and round.
Remove the dash. This job is NOT easy.
Mounted on the bottom of the engine block inside the oil pan. Pan must be remove to access the pump.
Drop the cradle & engine together
follow the top radiator hose to the engine. that is where your thermostat is. you will have to drain the radiator, remove the engine side of the hose and remove the thermostat housing to access it. remove thermostat clean mating surface of housing and engine, install thermostat, install housing, secure radiator hose, fill with coolant. start engine and check for leaks.
To bleed the cooling system on a Pontiac 2.4 engine, there is a small hose near the bottom of the radiator that needs to be removed. Then remove the radiator cap and the cap on the radiator overflow tank.
If it is a 6-cylinder engine the starter is at the "front" of the engine about 10 inches behind the bottom of the radiator. You have to jack up the front of the car and remove it from underneath.
