The main thing with hot yoga is the sweat. In a hot yoga class, a student will sweat extensively, resulting in a loss of water weight. This is not lasting weight loss as the student will have to rehydrate. The yoga itself, if practiced regularly, promotes a healthier lifestyle. A student will usually see physical changes, and will often notice clothing fitting differently. A regular yoga practice also encourages better eating habits which can lead to weight loss. I've been teaching yoga for 12 years, and I've seen students go through some pretty amazing physical, and mental transformations. Any type of yoga can promote weight loss, but it will ultimately depend on the student's discipline and devotion.

Yoga isn't such a hot choice for weight loss, it's just not strenuous enough. The increased amount of calories you burn are closely related to how much your heart rate increases, and yoga don't provide much of a heart rate increase. What you want for weigth loss is an activity which will get your heart rate well up, and keep it up for some time. That's why things like treadmills, ellipticals, rowing machines, cycling, jogging, walking etc are so good for caloire burn and weight loss. But sure, it'd be hard to eat while you're doing yoga, which would help in some little way with weight loss
