Yes your computer can be on idle, but not off. The screen can just go to sleep. Just to make sure, when the computer has idled, look at the iPod and see if it is charging. (the ipod should have a little lightning thing in the small battery on the top right-hand corner). Sorry if you had wrong info before, must've been a hassle.
In order to charge the tablet from the computer - you need to leave the computer switched on.
it will charge you just have to leave it pluged in the computer for like 5-10 min or so then you see the screen come on and it will charge.

Leave it on charge for 3-4 hours and don't disconnect it or turn off your computer during that time. Also don't synchronize it during the 3-4 hour period. :)
