There is a blackberry application called drivesafely that will do this. For free it will read 25 words from a text or email. Pretty neat.

You can't tell if someone has read your text message. But there will be a little 'r' beside the check mark in BBM (Blackberry Messenger) and that will show that it's been read, but only with BBM, not text messages.
