Lydia
Lydia, a wealthy woman from Thyatira, was a seller of purple cloth mentioned in the book of Acts. She was one of the first people in Philippi to convert to Christianity after hearing the teachings of the apostle Paul.
Acts 16:14 - Now a certain woman named Lydiaheard us. She was a seller of purple from the city of Thyatira, who worshiped God. The Lord opened her heart to heed the things spoken by Paul. [NKJV]
Lydia is mentioned as a seller of expensive textiles: Acts 16:14 And a certain woman named Lydia, a seller of purple, of the city of Thyatira, which worshipped God, heard us: whose heart the Lord opened, that she attended unto the things which were spoken of Paul.
You might be referring to Lydia, in the New Testament, who was a seller of purple. She is referred to in Acts 16:14: "And a certain woman named Lydia, a seller of purple, of the city of Thyatira, which worshipped God, heard us: whose heart the Lord opened, that she attended unto the things which were spoken of Paul." I don't believe that there is a reference to a worker of purple in the Old Testament. At least searching for "worker" and "purple" doesn't give any results.
The woman you have in mind is probably Lydia, a "seller of purple from the city of Thyatira" (Acts 16:14). She and her household were baptized in the town of Philippi on Paul's second missionary journey, while he was accompanied by Silas. (You have to look back to Acts 15:40to see that Silas was among Paul's company at the time.)
Lydia in the bible was the equivalent of today's retail fashion salesperson... Acts 16:14 And a certain woman named Lydia, a seller of purple, of the city of Thyatira, which worshipped God, heard [us]: whose heart the Lord opened, that she attended unto the things which were spoken of Paul. Not sure about the "Darragh" this name is not found in the scriptures.
Lydia of Thyatira was the first recorded convert to Christianity in Europe"Lydia" was probably not her real name. She was from Thyatira, which was formerly in the ancient Kingdom of Lydia before it was incorporated into the Roman Province of Asia. As Thyatira was still considered to be Lydia, she was perhaps called "Lydia" or the "Lydian lady". She was also a key person in the establishment and development of the church in Philippi (the key city in region of Macedonia). The Bible also describes her as a "dealer in purple cloth".More information:As mentioned, Acts 16:14+15 tells us that Lydia was a 'seller of purple'(KJV) from Macedonia, who listened to Paul during one of his preaching tours. The scripture says that God 'opened her heart' to pay attention to the things spoken by Paul, and she and her whole household were baptized as Christians. She is known and remembered for her appreciation and hospitality because she invited the apostles to her home and 'persuaded' or 'constrained' them. She just MADE them come. She was a faithful 'sister' sharing her home with the congregation even during difficult times(Acts 16:40). At the time she met Paul, she was living in Europe selling 'purple' (purple cloth and garments, and probably the dye itself). The term 'seller of purple' ("dealer in purple cloth"(NIV))signifies that she was a merchant, probably of some prominence, since she had a home large enough for the 'brothers' to meet in, and her occupation dealt with a costly item. The scriptures say that she was originally from Thyatira (now called 'Akhisar',150 miles from Istanbul). It was a city in Asia Minor famous for it's dyes, particularly it's scarlet or purple color made from the 'madder root'. 'Purple' dye was VERY costly, and often associated with wealth and royalty (Luke 16:19).
St. Lydia is the patron saint of dyers, sellers of purple cloth, and the city of Thyatira. She is also recognized as a patron of businesswomen and women in general.
(Acts 16:14, 15) 14 And a woman named Lydʹi·a, a seller of purple from the city of Thy·a·tiʹra and a worshipper of God, was listening, and Jehovah opened her heart wide to pay attention to the things Paul was saying. 15 Now when she and her household got baptized, she urged us: "If you have considered me to be faithful to Jehovah, come and stay at my house." And she just made us come.
