It is called the Timing Chain Cover. It is the same for most 289s and 302s.
According to the 1984 Chilton's Auto Repair Manual, the ignition timing on all 1979 Ford 302s would be 6 degrees before top dead center. The factory allows a tolerance of plus or minus 2 degrees.
Answer Firing orderThe firing order for a 302 (5.0) is 15426378 and a 351W (5.8) is 13726548. Be aware that both engines fire in a counterclockwise rotation. The 300 6 cylinder is 153624 with a clockwise rotation. The HO 302(5.0) has the same firing order as the 351W. Generally speaking, older 302s have the 15426378 firing order, while newer "5.0" 302s have the 13726548 firing order. The proper firing order for the engine is usually cast into the intake manifold.
Yes ... the 302s are all the same....the engine mounts are different and the transmission bell housing may be slightly different, but the engines are all the same.
302 or 305? 302s never did. 305(5liter) in about 90 or 92. I first saw factory roller cams on the 87's with one piece rear main seal and raised-rail heads.
Only what someone is willing to pay. I have a 302 and a 302S (Stainless) and paid about $100 each (new) thirty years ago. I use CCI Stingers only because I have never experienced a misfire or jam with them. I cannot say that about other ammo.
Standing at the front of the engine, hood open, the numbering is as follows. Passenger side from front to back: 1-2-3-4 Driver's side from front to back: 5-6-7-8 I believe this is also the standard numbering going back at least to the advent of the 289-302s, so that must put is at least into the 60s. -Tom Z
Go to your local parts store and purchase a 'Haynes'or 'Chilton' repair book for your make and model. lets start by saying that the mark VIII came from the factory with a 4.6 DOHC engine. my personal opinion is that a 5.0 or as us old timers call them 302s would have been a better choice I am in the middle of removing the 4.6 and replacing it with a 302 bored and stroked to 349 You will need to jack up the Mark VIII to get under it. There are three 10mm bolts securing the starter to the engine. You will have to look with a flash light to find the top one but the other two are to either side of the solenoid. You will need a fair bit of patience getting the bolts out - especially the one on the top. You will need some swivels and extensions to get the sockets up to the bolts. There are also two nuts holding wires to the solenoid (10mm and 1/2"). I disconnected the battery (important!!!) and then the wires to the solenoid. I then loosened the two bolts by the solenoid before removing the top bolt. I found it helpful to have swivel sockets and someone to hold a light. Once you finish getting the bolts removed the starter should basically be sitting loose. I had to twist and turn the starter to get it out but it did come out without needing to remove anything else.
There are three kinds of 302s made from 1982-2001. 5.0L HO This engine was used in 1983-1995 Mustangs, Mark VII Lincolns, and some T-birds and Cougars. All Explorer 5.0L engines are 5.0L HO engines as well. They use the 351W firing order, 1-3-7-2-6-5-4-8. Except for the 1983-84 Mustangs, all of these engines are roller cam equipped. They use a reverse rotation water pump and front cover. The 1994-5 Mustang and all Explorers use a unique front cover and water pump. 5.0L Full Size Car This engine was used in 1982-1990 Crown Victoria and Grand Marquis. They use the 289-302 firing order, 1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8. Most of these cars are not roller cam equipped, however sometime in the early 1990s they started using roller cams but retained the 302 firing order. They use a standard (clockwise) rotation water pump and front cover. 5.0L Truck (except Explorer) These engines are similar to the Full Size Car engines, except they use different intake manifolds and camshaft profiles. They also use the 289-302 firing order, 1-5-4-2-6-3-7-8. They also began using roller cams sometime in the early 1990s. They use a reverse rotation water pump and front cover.
