You used to be able to take them on, and the cabin crew would put it in their cupboard. This was before all the madness of the planes flying into the trade centre in new york. Nowadays they have to go into the cargo hold as they are larger then the 400 X 200 which they allow in the over head compartments.

Depending upon the size of the TV and the airline (and even the seating class), you may be able to take it aboard as carryon if it will fit in the overhead compartment or under your seat. If it is bigger than that, you should contact your airline about trasporting it with checked luggage. You should make sure it is in the original shipping container, as this is the best way to transport it. Most airlines will charge an additional fee for transporting items like this in addition to your regular luggage.
You have to fit specific dimensions, or get it stored with oversized luggage compartment.
