Shouldnt think so... if you were enemies then why would you consider yourselves friends? especially if you were friends for ages!

You could say things hypothetically, like: 'what would you say if I said I fancied you?' or 'what would you do if I kissed you?'. That way he will have an idea but you didn't tell him anything.
