Currently, many major manufacturers offer high efficiency a/c units that have a function as a dehumidifier. Normal a/c units are sized to the cooling load of the space and in high humidity areas do not reduce levels adequately. Mismatching coil sizes to outdoor units has been a popular approach, to fudge this condition for years. Newer two speed units will, after approaching the set point of the thermostat, within a few degrees, drop down to low speed where an increase in dehumidification will occur without overshooting the cooling set point on the thermostat This approach satisfies comfort issues very nicely. A true dehumidifier removes the moisture by virtue of an a/c coil while a reheat coil or resistance heat strip returns the cooled air to a reasonable temperature. The reheat function cost money. The two speed units reduce operating costs as they use less power on low than on high. LG and Mitsubishi offer ductless mini split units that have a dehumidification function built in. These brands have been used around the world for years in this type of application. Their popularity in the U.S. is increasing by virtue of the rise in our energy costs. Look around on the ARI website for efficiency ratings, etc.

Adding a dehumidifier is only appropiate when your home has an unmatched tonnage/duct work delivery/sq. footage combination. If your AC does not stay on for at least 30min(it cools to fast), then your home would be cold and humid. You would want the correct match for sq.footage/tonage so that this does not happen. The house with a properly matched AC / sq.footage combination in Florida does not need a dehumidifier.

If the following is true then you would want one:(You have a 4-ton unit for a 3-ton house.) You might want to add a dehumidifier. This is especially true if your asthmatic, since you would need a relative humidity of less than or equal to 40%.

Should you run dehumidifier and central air at same time?

It is okay to run a dehumidifier and central air at the same time. This will help keep the costs down for the air conditioner. If the dehumidifier is running, the air temperature will cool off quicker and the air conditioner can be turned up a little higher.

Is there any harm to a central air conditioner and a free standing dehumidifier operating at the same time?

huh?
