Ever hear the phrase "Man's best friend"? Could you even imagine having your best friend maul you, leave you to die, starve you... and have yourself forgive them? I think that animals would be nicer, and gain trust more easily if they were not abused. On the flip, however, there are many animals who live long happy lives because they have never been abused. In conclusion, human population would fare better with one less crime to deal with, and animals would fare better if the crime hadn't taken place at all. :(
