Absolutely! It left me high and dry once. It was not the sensor itself, but was the wire harness leading down to the sensor, on the back side of the block, passenger side. The harness melted or shorted, whatever happened, it was inside the sheath, concealed until I started cutting the sheath off and seeing the carnage. I replaced the sensor and plug (new sensor comes with new style plug, get one that includes the plug or the new redesigned sensor will not fit the old plug) and repair the burned wires in the harness. Mine were bad about 12 inches up the harness. Took me about 1 hour, 15 of that was trying to remove the old sensor from the block as it has a clip that is difficult to unfasten.
On a 1996 Plymouth Breeze, the crankshaft sensor can be found above the oil filter. It should be accessible without having to remove any other parts.
Directly above/behind the top of the oil filter.
On the side of the engine above/behind the oil filter.
Check the coil pack or the cam position sensor
No such sensor.
Mine is on the back of the engine block.. right above the drive axle , there is one there called crankshaft sensor and then right above it is the oil pressure sensor mine has one wire coming out of it...
You can not prevent a sensor from failing.
The crankshaft position sensor is required and can not be bypassed.

No, just a cam position sensor in the distributor.
