Mercury or ethanol thermometer in arctic?

Definitely ethanol. Ethanol doesn't freeze until around -178F; mercury freezes at around -38F. You aren't going to see -178F in the arctic on earth, but -38F is far from impossible.

Why would you take an alcohol thermometer to Antarctic?

Mercury freezes or at least does not expand and contract at the calculated rate under arctic conditions. I.E., the expansion coefficient of mercury does not allow it to operate at that extreme temperature so as to give accurate results.

Why would you use alcohol in an arctic thermometer?

Elemental mercury changes to solid-state at -38.8oC, so anything below that will not be recorded. Most places in the world, this isn't important, but at both poles temperatures can drop below this temperature, so for accurate temperature recording, a mercury thermometer is inappropriate. That said, if it's for your own personal use, the difference between -38 and -40 is irrelevant, it's just plain cold!

What liquid is advisable to use as liquid inside the thermometer mercury or alcohol?

Rather ironically, it depends on the temperatures involved. Most thermometers use mercury. Partly, this is because the silver colour of the mercury make it easy to read, but mainly because they work over a useful range of temperatures for everyday use. However, one problem with mercury is that its melting point is -38oC; so below that temperature the thermometer would freeze - this makes it unsuitable for use in very cold environments. Alchohol thermometers (usually ethanol is used) work from around -115oC, so they are used in low temperature environments - the disadvantage with alcohol is that it vaporises at 78oC so it isn't useful in very hot environments.
