If it is a formal letter or to a person at a company then obviously you should know the surname (could be lots of Diane's in one company). If it is a informal letter then if you have the FULL address it should get there. The postcode system is pretty accurate in the UK and will identify the address to around 20 buildings but you need the house/flat number to make sure it gets to the correct one.
