No - He did not in fact travel across the entire world (he went from Venice to China along the Silk Road) and this journey while long, does not cover much more than 1/4 of the world.
Yes - At the time he made the journey, and from the perspective of his native Venice, he went beyond the boundaries of the world known to the Venetians of his day and thus it could be said he crossed "his" world.

on his first voyage to cathay (or china) he traveled by land because no one had traveled by water until christopher columbus years later. but if marco polo went on other voyages (which i'm not sure if he did or not) i would suspect to be fairly large since it would have to hold much people. i hope this helped!
