if you get dirt in a transmission while drive 1000 miles you could ruin it. no question about it...
Yes, it helps when driving at highway speeds.
Driving in 3rd gear instead of fourth will not affect your transmission as much as your engine. In fact, if you are driving in a manner that causes a lot of shifting between 3rd and 4th, it may be easier on the transmission to leave it in 3rd. If your transmission needs fixed, I don't think it would be from leaving it in 3rd gear. As far as cost, it will vary greatly depending on what needs done and what type of car you have.
The Great Northern Highway.
there is a highspeed highway leaving it
Secure your vehicle.
Highway 16, the 'Yellowhead' eastbound. Also called the Trans Canada Highway.

A short story about you being the main character, driving down a highway from atop a mountain down to a city. you grow bored, and you decide to take an alternate path, eventually leaving your car and 'getting lost'.
It depends where in West Virginia you are leaving from.
Many of the newer automatic transmissions do not have a dipstick or a way for you to easily add fluid. Try a transmission shop. On a related note, many transmission shops offer a discounted service, then show you metal in the pan and try to tell you that you need to rebuild the transmission NOW claiming that it's about to fail, leaving you stranded. The reality is, it's not necessarily an indicator of how long the transmission will last. Just change the fluid, replace the filter and tell them that you don't want to rebuild the transmission right now. If it isn't slipping or having any other noticable symptoms, just wait for it to fail.
About 3/5 of the way there.
