Low fuel level wouldn't normaly cause the 'check engine or check engine soon' light to come on, the never vehicles will have a 'low fuel' light that will come on when you get down to a couple gallons left.
If what you are seeing is a 'Check Engine Soon' light or similar you need to have the vehicles computer scanned to find out what the problem is, vehicles have all kinds of sensors on them that can cause that light to come on and a scanner will read the code of the offending part for that vehicle.
Take it to an auto parts store (usually free or minor fee) or take it to the auto dealer and pay more money to get it scanned, if the vehicle is in warranty take it to the dealer.
