Why did they consider making nuclear weapons?

WW II was a desperate struggle and there was no guarantee that the Allied forces would win. It was therefore thought to be a good idea to make advances in weapons technology. Of course today we have the problem of nuclear proliferation and the threat that someday nuclear weapons would be used for some very destructive purpose, but when nuclear weapons were invented, all that mattered was winning the war that was in progress at the time.

Is nuclear weapons essential for this world?

No way..!! In my opinion I think that nuclear weapons are not at all necessary or essential for this world....today people might say that they are necessary for national security and all....but what about the time when nuclear weapons were not even created..?? Even then there used to be wars and many people died as a result...but today...if you drop a nuclear bomb not only deaths occur but also the environment is damaged...more killings of the innocent occur...They might be able to scare away another country from attacking but....once a war starts and there is usage of nuclear weapons.....there is much much more damage that takes place than it would really have if nuclear weapons would not have existed... both on mankind and the nature...!!!

Who developed the term 'Thermonuclear war' and how does it differ from conventional nuclear war?

"Thermonuclear" is a term derived from the science of physics, and was not developed by any one person, to describe a type of weapon and the type of war the use of such a weapon would create. All the ready-to-fire nuclear weapons in the world today are thermonuclear weapons -- there is no difference. Therefore the type of 'war' their use would create would be no different. Also, there is no such thing as a 'conventional nuclear war'; the term makes no sense whatsoever. Conventionalmeans non-nuclear conflict (tanks, planes, men, etc.), nuclear means use of nuclear weapons. The moment a conventional war escalates to the use of nuclear weapons, it ceases to be conventional. So remember, thermonuclear war is the same as nuclear war; they do not differ.

How do nuclear weapons prevent wars?

Today, if any country decided to send a missile over to our country, we would know via satellite that they had fired (in a matter of mere seconds). By knowing they are sending a nuclear bomb to our country, we would fire one them. This would mean a nuclear fallout; our bombs are at least thirty times stronger than the bombs released at Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945. This keeps any country from using nuclear weapons on each other for fear of nuclear fallout.

What countries are allowed to have nuclear weapons?

Today eight countries are in possessionn of nuclear weapons. The five nuclear weapons states United States, Russia (former Soviet Union), United Kingdom, France and China, are the only countries allowed to have nuclear weapons according to the Non-Proliferation Treaty (NPT) from 1970.
