fast.....slow would allow more movement to be captured.
You neeed to use a fast shutter speed to freeze any sort of action when you are photographing sports, action or even fast moving wildlife or birds. Usually well over 1/500th of a second. You may need to change your ISO setting to 400 to 800 if you want to use high shutter speeds, on not-so-bright days, that are overcast, cloudy or without sunlight.
All shots rely on three settings - the shutter speed, aperture (lens opening) and ISO or film speed. The first, shutter speed, is the most important to stop the action. Putting the camera in a sports mode effectively shortens the length of time the shutter is open, reducing the motion blur in pictures. This can be done manually by letting more light into the camera either by making the aperture larger (lower f/ number) or raising the ISO.
This will depend on what you are shooting. If you are shooying water a slow shutter speed will do - if it's sports photography you will need a fast shutter speed. The shutter is a mechanical device that controls the length of time that light is allowed to act on the film. With a shutter speed of 1/125 you shoud avoid blur if the subject is not moving. Any speed under this your camera should be placed on a tripod. www.goldprints.com
The faster your shutter speed is, the more underexposed (darker) your subject/ scene will be. fast shutter speeds include 1/200th of a second, 1/320, 1/400, 1/500, 1/640, 1/800, 1/1000 and so on. If the shutter is slower (1/30, 1/40, 1/50 1/60, 1/100, 1/160) it will let more light in. with a slower shutter and moving objects, motion blur will occur, which is why a faster shutter is used to take action shots such as sports, and a slower shutter is used in Modeling photography to capture those vivid colors and lights.

High quality, professional cameras would be best for trying to capture extreme sports. Lenses that have fast shutter speeds often help in this area of picture taking.
Aperture is hole that shutter creates to let in light to compose your image. The bigger the aperture, or smaller the f-stop (f/2), lets in more light. The shutter speed is how fast the shutter opens and closes. This has a major part to do with the lighting and whether the motion in your picture will freeze or blur. A high shutter speed (1/4000) will freeze all motion but majorily decrease light.
