The first water thermometer was created during the 16th century. In the year 1593, Galileo Galilei did the existing thermoscope one step better and created a basic water thermometer. This newer version was the first type of thermometer to allow variations in temperature. Galileo found that, if he used liquid that was less dense than water, he could suspend those liquids in a vial of water, which would rise as the temperature increased. Galileo was able to take the information he discovered and develop a model of a thermoscope that used fine droplets of alcohol. These droplets maintained their cohesion in the water and would rise to the top as the temperature of the water slowly increased. There are those that believe the use of alcohol by Galileo later inspired the use of mercury.

It would spoil the alcohol due to the plastic in the balloon, but it wouldn't doa anything else, unless the balloon or the alcohol was hot, the the balloon would pop.

An Alcohol thermometer would be the best as it is more sensitive than the mercury thermometer.

If I only had those 2 choices... I would use ALCOHOL since Mercury freezes at -38.72° Celsius. The North Pole can get down below -50° Celsius. Ethanol (alcohol) freezes at -114 ° Celsius Methanol (alcohol) freezes at -97.8° Celsius
There is no mechanical difference between a kelvin thermometer and any other kind so I think it would be the same as other thermometers i.e. Alcohol (because it is not as dangerous as mercury)
They both have advantages and disadvantages: A mercury-in-glass thermometer can measure high temperature (up to 357 0C, the boiling point of mercury; and its freezing point is -39 0C). An alcohol-in-glass thermometer can measure low temperature (down to -115 0C, the freezing point of alcohol; and its boiling point is 78 0C.) A mercury-in-glass thermometer can quickly response to temperature, while an alcohol-in-glass thermometer can only slowly response to temperature. However, mercury is poisonous and alcohol is NOT poisonous. Also mercury thermometers are not allowed on aircraft.
Modern thermometers don't use mercury, they use a colored alcohol solution... and yes it would be dangerous.
It's the red thing in thermometers. [wrong I'm sorry.] the red thread in a thermometer is coloured alcohol. If the thread is mercury, then it will be silver-coloured.
It could be used to do this - it is capable of doing it. However, Mercury is poisonous and a mercury thermometer is made out of fragile glass. Thus the danger that the thermometer would break releasing mercury into the milk (which would be for a person to drink) means that a mercury thermomiter is not the temperature sensor to use in this instance.
