When you get the Pal Pad from downstairs in the Pokemon Center, you can open it up to see your registered friends or add a new friend. After getting your friend's code, you can simply input the name of your friend (It doesn't matter what you pick, it automatically changes when register is completed) and then their friend code. It'll show up in the Pal Pad on the first slot. If it's a Sprite with a question mark, your friend did not add your friend code yet. When it's all successful, your friend's character will appear with their name.
