You're not able to take your grand prix out of park you hear a clicking noise in the steering column when you try to take it out of park anyone have an answer for this?

I had the same problem and changed out the brake silinoid that's located on the brake pedal under the dash and thought that solved it to find two day's later the same problem so I took down the middle console to find out that the engage rod in the shifter was not releaseing and that the shift lock wasn't releaseing either so I just purchased a whole nother gear shifter and problem solved.==Frustrateing but beat's running it to the shop

I've had a similar problem and while the problem was difficult to figure out, the solution was an easy fix:

The car would not come out of park unless I used a key or something to manually push in the override button. Then when placed back in park the ignition didn't want to release the keys. After taking the car to the dealership (and paying WAY too much) I found-out it was a faulty brake switch. Try replacing it, it's a safety issue.

AnswerNo,I dont believe that it is electrical,I had the same problem one day and was kinda freaked out by it,took about 15 minutes but,I think what I did was,if you look just to the right of the shifter there is a little gray cover,about 1/2 inch wide,take that off and push in on it and that seems to be how I got mine to go into gear,if there are any more comments on this please add them cuz it was pretty weird,didnt really see any reason for it... Answeron my '97 Grand Prix LE, there is a mechanical lever inside the shifter cover. i got access by taking out the little "catch-all" cubby-hole in front of the shifter (floor shift, automatic). i reached my left hand almost down to the end of the shifter and there's an "L" shaped plastic lever on the passenger side. you've got to have your foot on the brake (as usual), push the little lever toward the driver's side, it just barely moves but then you can shift from park. there's something else down there you can do if you can't get the key out of the ignition switch cuz it won't go all the way to take the key out. i figured it out once, now i can't remember how i did it.
