I would say yes if you want to play sport or undergo physical activity other than walking in the future. Also, if you don't, your knee will be unsupported for certain things (like walking down stairs or stepping off the gutter) and so with the instability comes the added risk of further damage to other parts of the knee, such as the meniscus (the cushioning part).
I was 19 when I had mine done and although it was tough, I definitely made the right decision. I would recommend private health insurance too!
Im 14 and i have torn my acl. I spoke to the consultant and he said that anybody under the age of 18 definitely need surgery. Usually people over that age can revover from an acl tear by doing physio.
