The consequences (long-term and short-term) of the Holocaust included:

  1. The death of about six million Jews.
  2. The disappearance of a distinctive Jewish culture in Eastern Europe. (Before the Holocaust cities like Warsaw, Vilnius and Odessa had been major Jewish cultural centres.
  3. The passing of international (United Nations) laws on genocide.
  4. It played some part in the creation of Israel as a state. Note that the notion that the guilt-ridden Allies, who had done nothing specifically targeted at preventing or ending or even disrupting the Holocaust, 'gave' the Jews Israel as some kind of consolation is incorrect. The Jews had to fight for the creation of Israel. Having said that, the Holocaust strengthened the determination of many Jews to fight for a state of their own - and may have led to a vague, general sense of goodwill. Obviously, the establishment of the state of Israel has resulted in extreme tensions between Israel and some Arab states - a problem that has not been resolved.
  5. In the much longer term, the Holocaust has made racism unacceptable.
  6. American (and West European) backing for Israel is often given as one reason among many for the rise of Islamic Fundamentalism.
