you can get as much power if not more than a 350 by changing the cam, a new intake, pistons, air cleaner, plugs, wires and get some good fel injector cleaner how much do you have to spend? Get the 350. youll want the torque. This all depends on what you have to spend though. if you got $500 then do intake, chip and higher gear ratio in back, assuming you can do most this yourslef. If yyou got a couple grand, find a running 350 swap computer, injectors(2) and other misc. and change cam headers. i would install the 350,see answer above I would go with the 350 swap. More power stock so youre already starting off better with the 350. The only way i would go with the 305 is if I was really worried about gas mileage.
looking down from (ONTOP) of the engine they are behind the water pump
I've heard of someone dropping a twin turbo charged engine from a Sunfire GT. I'm looking now lol....
Was looking at dropping an Acura Integra engine in ours, check out www.hondaswap.net for info on engine swaps

1996 caprice can you remove 4.3 engine and install a 5.7?
(This is from the 91 Caprice service manual for the HEI ignition system) Looking at the distributor cap from the front of the engine bay, and running clockwise around the cap from about the 1 o'clock position, the wire numbering is: 3,6,5,7,2,1,8,4
Yes, it will definitely fit.
It would help to know the type of engine (305 or 350?) and is this for California emissions or Canada or the USA? Check out the Automotive Forums, Caprice section (link below) and you can try a search for what you are looking for.
